Inspiring Catholic educators as pilgrims of hope

More than 800 Catholic educators gathered recently for a day of faith, formation and collaboration at the Pilgrims of Hope in Catholic Education Conference.

Teachers from 18 MACS primary schools engaged in professional learning as part of their accreditation to teach in a Catholic school. The program was designed to deepen the knowledge and skills of educators, empowering them to confidently share the life, tradition and mission of the Church in their classrooms and communities.

“The day offered meaningful opportunities for spiritual enrichment, professional learning and collegial connection.” Michael Bonnici, Principal, Holy Eucharist School, St Albans.

The day centred on the Jubilee Year of Hope. In his opening keynote, Dr Joel Hodge, Head of the Australian Catholic University School of Theology, invited teachers to reflect deeply about how their role as Pilgrims of Hope in Catholic education.

“Working in Catholic education is not just a career, it is a calling, a vocation to help in the formation of others.” Dr Joel Hodge

The second session featured three workshops designed by Dr Beth Nolen, MACS Religious Education Excellence Manager. Under the theme Living the Mission: RE’s Role in Forming Missionary Disciples, participants explored the unique contribution of religious education in MACS schools through vibrant activities and collaborative opportunities.

Throughout the day, participants discovered practical strategies to connect theology with classroom practice, while also building collegial relationships. The event concluded with an instructional Mass, which was a highlight for many.

The Pilgrims of Hope in Catholic Education Conference brought together a community of educators united in faith, learning and shared purpose. It was a day that not only enriched professional practice but also reaffirmed the spiritual mission at the heart of Catholic education.
